dalMap License

dalMap is source-available, not open source. The intent is simple: amateur radio operators, clubs, and groups should be able to use dalMap, share it, and show it to people, as long as nobody is making money from it.

The shape of this grant

Whatever the licenses of dalMap’s third-party components grant you, you have. This document takes none of it away.
In addition, you may use dalMap, link to it, display it publicly, and refer to it — for any purpose that is not commercial.
In addition, you may re-use dalMap’s static reference data with attribution.
Nothing further is granted. Commercial use, automated or bulk re-use, and giving out something made from dalMap are withheld.

What you may do

Use it. Use the hosted map at https://map.kf2em.com. Do everything an ordinary browser does with a page: fetch, cache, render, execute, and apply your own accessibility and display settings.

Point people at it. Clubs, groups, classes, and individuals may store, forward, and display links to dalMap — in a newsletter, on a club site, in a training pack, on a slide, as a QR code at a meeting. Linking needs no permission and has no limit. Send people to the map rather than sending them a copy of it, and they arrive at the current one.

Show it. Run dalMap on a screen where people can see it — a club meeting, a library, a classroom, a hamfest, a field day tent, a public demonstration, a museum or maker space. Use it as a learning tool or a visual aid. No permission or notice is needed. This holds whether the audience is three people or three hundred, so long as the display itself is not a commercial activity.

Refer to it. Cite it, link it, screenshot it, write about it, teach from it, put it in a presentation or a club newsletter. Attribution is appreciated and, for its static data, required — see below.

Re-use its static reference data, with attribution. dalMap’s reference material — grid and zone geometry, entity references, band and mode tables, published schedules — may be re-used in your own non-commercial work if you credit dalMap. This does not extend to automated or bulk extraction, and it does not extend to live observations. See Data.

What you may not do

Make money from it. No commercial use of dalMap, its data, or anything built around it. See What “commercial” means.
Automate or bulk-extract it. No scraping, crawling, systematic harvesting, bulk export, relaying, archiving, or wiring dalMap into another service as a data source. The grant above is for people looking at a map, not for programs consuming a feed.
Give out something made from it. Do not modify, adapt, translate, port, rebrand, or build another product from dalMap and then hand it on — published, hosted, bundled into something else, or passed to one person. The line is distribution rather than the editor: what you do to your own copy, on your own machine, is yours, and what you pass on is not. Reading the source to understand it is fine, and ordinary use — configuring it, caching it, running it in your browser — was never a derivative work.
Copy, mirror, or redistribute it. Do not hand out copies, mirror it on a server, bundle it into anything, or host it for other people. Link to it instead. A copy of dalMap is not a document — it is a live service that draws on the same providers under someone else’s attribution and quota, and it goes stale the moment dalMap changes while still looking current to whoever is reading it.
Present it as something else. The name “dalMap”, the dalMap marks, and the map.kf2em.com domain are not licensed here. Point people at dalMap as dalMap.
Strip attribution. Where you re-use static reference data, credit dalMap; where you quote or excerpt it, keep the provider attributions from the Data sources and terms page with what you took.

If you need something this license does not permit, ask. Any permission beyond this document has to be granted in writing and covers only the use it names.

What “commercial” means

Use that is primarily intended for or directed toward commercial advantage or monetary compensation.

Not commercial: operating your own station. A club using it at a meeting or on its own network. A library or school showing it. A volunteer emergency-communications exercise. A club that charges membership dues, or an event with an admission fee, using dalMap as part of what it does — the money is for the club or the event, not for dalMap.

Commercial: selling dalMap or access to it. Bundling it into a product or service you charge for. Running it as part of a paid installation, a consultancy deliverable, or an employer’s commercial operations. Putting it behind advertising or a paywall. Using its data in something you sell.

Advertising, specifically. Showing dalMap on a surface that also carries advertising is commercial use — whether the advertising funds the display, or the display draws the audience the advertising is sold against. It does not matter which of the two is the primary focus of that surface: content that gathers attention, and advertising sold against that attention, are one arrangement seen from either end.

This is about the surface dalMap appears on, not the room it is in. A sponsor banner on a club wall, an advertiser’s page in a hamfest programme, or a venue that sells signage elsewhere does not make a demonstration commercial. A page, screen, kiosk, feed, or stream that presents dalMap together with advertising does.

Third-party components

dalMap is built on installed dependencies, each under its own license, recorded in THIRD_PARTY_NOTICES.md. This document does not modify and cannot restrict them. Where a component’s license grants reuse, that reuse is authorized — including reuse this document would otherwise withhold, such as modification, redistribution, or commercial use of that component. Where the two disagree about a component, that component’s license governs it.

The restrictions above apply to the dalMap original work: the map interface and its application code, the layer, filter, and planning implementations written for dalMap, the provider integration and caching layer, the route handlers, the build and verification tooling, the operator guide, and this repository’s documentation.

Data

Static reference data — grid and zone geometry, entity references, band and mode tables, published schedules, and similar material that does not change from minute to minute — may be re-used in non-commercial work with attribution to dalMap. Not by automated extraction, and not commercially.

Live observations — current activity reports, conditions, alerts, calculated results, and anything else dalMap presents as current — are for personal and non-commercial use as displayed. They are not licensed for re-use, redistribution, archiving, or incorporation into another product or dataset.

Provider data is not dalMap’s to license. Map imagery, observations, and alerts come from independent providers under their own terms, attribution requirements, and usage limits, which apply to you directly and which this document cannot widen. The Data sources and terms page is the current register of what applies to each. Where a provider’s terms are narrower than this license, theirs govern.

Facts and published specifications are not licensed by this document, by dalMap or by anyone else.
